Our Teaching and Learning Philosophy:
At St Gabriel’s we are committed to high quality teaching and learning. We are dedicated to fostering an environment where both educators and students thrive. High quality teaching is characterised by a robust understanding of subject matter, innovative pedagogical approaches, and an unwavering commitment to the individual needs of learners. We employ diverse instructional strategies to engage students, enhance their critical thinking skills, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning.
At St Gabriel’s RC High School, our teaching and learning philosophy is rooted in our Mission Statement. We specifically focus on this important aspect: ‘We strive to use our God-given talents to serve others and to succeed’. Through quality first teaching, we endeavour to promote and develop our values of Strength, Service and Success. In order to do this, we have developed ‘TEACH – Teaching Habits of Excellence’. These principles allow us to deliver high quality teaching and ensure that assessment processes are rigorous and enables us to provide timely and constructive feedback that informs our teaching and learning and promotes success for all.

Committed to Professional Development:
“The greatest of all pleasures is the pleasure of learning”- Aristotle
At St Gabriel’s we believe both staff and students never stop learning. We are certain that there is a pleasure to be found in helping pupils to learn through developing our teaching and learning strategies based on the latest academic research.
We have a culture of continuous professional development at our core, and we take pride in providing opportunities for all staff to develop their practice. We value our teachers by providing high-quality support and training throughout their career at St Gabriel’s.
All new staff, trainee teachers and Early Career Teachers receive an induction day which explores all aspects of St Gabriel’s life including: Catholic ethos and spirituality; pastoral care; behaviour for learning; teaching and learning principles of excellence; assessment; feedback; home learning; personal development; health and safety; safeguarding.
Throughout the year, teachers receive CPD in the form of briefings, twilight sessions, PAD days, department meetings, teaching and learning newsletters, a developmental approach to appraisal, external courses and other enhanced in-house bespoke CPD opportunities.
We have a very successful and long history of working with all the North West Universities for Initial Teacher Training and capitalise on using their latest research to inform teaching and learning strategies.
We know high-quality teaching enhances students’ experience of education, improves their outcomes and ensures the best future prospects. We know effective professional development is the key to high-quality teaching, and always strive to ensure our teachers receive the best training and support.
“The only thing that really matters is the quality of the teacher.” (Dylan Wiliam)
